SSM Registration by an Online Seller

We have recently received a noteworthy article sent by one of our Sellers, Belman, regarding SSM registration experience for his online business. We thought it was interesting and we would like to share with the rest of Trosians.

Lately online merchants, full or part timers alike, are facing a dilemma over whether or not to register their enterprise with SSM in the wake of SSM and MCMC prosecution against a handful of unregistered online sellers recently. There seems to be no clear guidelines to this issue as far as MCMC is concerned but the basic rule being enforced by SSM is that anyone who wishes to venture into business, in general, is required by law to register their business with SSM failing which; that person shall be viewed by law as conducting an illegal business in Malaysia. What this means is that it does not matter whether your business is online or offline you are still required by SSM to register your business enterprise, period.

As such, my advice to would-be online sellers as well as unregistered veteran sellers, big or small, is to get their venture listed with SSM to avoid unnecessary risk or worse getting prosecuted by the authorities for conducting illegal business.

Besides, with a legit business registration entrepreneurs should have no problem declaring their income with LHDN thus helping them buy properties or other assets in the future with no hassle at all.

I’m currently selling my products online and have chosen to register with SSM. Allow me to share my experience with you the process that I went through:-

I checked out SSM official website at www.ssm.gov.my but to my dismay failed to register online even though the feature was there. A few of my friends had the same experience when they tried.

Not to be beaten easily, I decided to visit SSM main office at The Mall in KL the next day. Well, it turned out that it was not as difficult as I had thought. First, get your form at the counter; of course don’t forget to queue first. Fill up about 7 to 9 pages of the forms given which among other things include your choice of company name, nature of business, official address et cetera. Once you are done with the filling up just proceed to submit the forms at the respective counter (don’t forget to queue again) pay the fees at the same time, take a seat and wait for your name to be called.

For those who would like to register as a sole proprietorship the registration fee is RM75 per annum. You may choose to pay 5 years fees in one go. You may also register using your own name as per your NRIC and the fee is a mere RM35 per year.

Well, to fast forward I had to wait for another 2 hours before I finally got my certificate but what a feeling it was. The whole process took me half a day to complete but not bad for Malaysian Boleh bureaucracy. Ooopsy! You guys may have better luck than me who knows.

Anyway, now I can proudly claim that I am a full fledge serious businessman, online, offline, whatever line and have requested my portal operator to consider putting up a “SSM registered” bling bling badge on my shop :-) . Two thumbs up for me. You are next guys.

Q: What inspired you to start your business?

A: I am a qualified chef, so i decided to combine my two passion in life: dogs and food.

A: Fitting everything in! There’s never enough time – I always need at least another five hours in the day.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering starting up an online business?

A: Really research every aspect. It can mount up, all the different services you need – hosting, payment gateway and so on – and you’re sometimes tied into a year payments. Also, spend as much money as you can afford on photos. I ended up wasting money trying to do it on the cheap, and it’s such an important aspect of the websites; customers are drawn further in by the way the first page looks.Last but not least, before you “go live”, get as many different types of people as possible to try out the website to make sure it’s user-frinedly.
